Simple Science of Reading Resources

Why the Science of Reading?

The research behind the Science of Reading is so intriguing and I wanted to share how I incorporate it daily into my instruction. I wanted to make it SIMPLE for teachers to make this shift to teaching phonemic and decoding skills explicitly. Then, I will get to science of reading resources!

Science of reading definition

The 7 key components will build the reading foundation that every student needs to become a successful reader.

  • Phonological/Phoneme Awareness
  • Word Identification: Phonics/Decoding
  • Automatic Word Recognition (“Sight Words”)
  • Reading Fluency (accuracy, rate, expression)
  • Spelling/Encoding
  • Handwriting
  • Language/Literacy Proficiency

The science of reading is a collection of evidence-based strategies that can be used to help young children learn to read. These strategies are particularly effective when used in the early childhood classroom.

One such strategy is phonemic awareness, which involves recognizing and manipulating the sounds in words. Teachers can help children develop phonemic awareness by engaging them in activities such as rhyming, segmenting, and blending sounds. Another important strategy is phonics, which involves teaching children the relationship between letters and sounds. This can be done through explicit instruction and by providing opportunities for children to practice decoding words.

In addition to these strategies, it is also important for teachers to provide children with ample opportunities to practice reading and to read aloud to them regularly. This helps to build children’s vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.

By using these science of reading strategies in the early childhood classroom, teachers can help set children on a path towards reading success. Not only do these strategies help children learn to read, but they also foster a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

My Favorite Science of Reading Resources

One such resource is the Orton-Gillingham approach, which emphasizes phonics and phonemic awareness to teach children to read. This method uses a multi-sensory approach that engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. Another resource is Really Great Reading, which also focuses on phonics, but also includes instruction in vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

With my passion of teaching reading, I have created many resources for myself and teachers like you! I have created my resources based on the research behind teaching children how to read. I also want the resources to be easy to understand, easy to print, and easy to use!

First, all of my favorites can be found in my GIANT Science of Reading Bundle. WHAT??!! This is by far the best value I have on TPT…check it out!
