Using Orton Gillingham in the Classroom

I Love O.G.!

Orton Gillingham phonics program has made such a difference in my classroom.  It is a multi-sensory  phonics curriculum.  In the first grade curriculum it builds on the correct letter formation in handwriting and the sounds the letters make.  Keep reading for more Orton Gillingham phonics tips for primary grades.

What is Orton Gillingham?

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a  multi-sensory and structured to teach reading, writing, and spelling.

It is commonly used for students with dyslexia, but can be used to help all students feel more confident when they read and write!

Outline of Instruction:

  1. Three-Part Drill
  2. New Concept
  3. Decoding and Learning Activities
  4. Red Words
  5. Comprehension

We use sand trays to practice sounds.  The sand trays provide a multi-sensory approach to learning letters and making connections to the brain on how the letter is formed correctly.  Once many sounds are introduced, we review the sounds using the sand trays.

Using Red Words

Red Words are also a component of OG.  It is the high frequency word study.  Students are introduced new words each week.  The most important part is to make sure the students explain WHY the words are following typical spelling patterns.  We explicitly teach what parts of the word follow phonetic rules and which parts do not.

This might be my favorite part of the day.  I love seeing the students practice tricky words and by the end of week spell all of them correct using the tricks we have practiced.

Science of Reading Guide

I made a free guide for teachers and parents to make it easy to incorporate the Science of Reading with their students.  The research behind the Science of Reading is so intriguing and I wanted to share how I incorporate it daily into my instruction.

I wanted to make it SIMPLE for teachers to make this shift to teaching phonemic and decoding skills explicitly.
