Testing out some of our flexible seating choices…and building reading stamina at the same time.
- Wobble stools
- Yoga ball with chair
- Wobble seat cushions
- Surf Desks
- Floor cushion seats
- Standing desk or table (I used bed risers from Wal-Mart)
The students are able to choose a new seat each day that works best for them. Many of the seats are also used during small group time.
We discuss what happens if 2 or more students want to the same seat. Usually it ends with one student saying they can use it next time…they realize we will be here all year!

Flexible seating has made such a difference in my classroom. When students make their way into the classroom…they are much more excited to choose where they want to sit for the day…engaged in the learning!
Tips…Be very clear with expectations for each seating choice.
Introduce seating choices gradually at beginning of the school year.
If students use seats inappropriately, move them quickly to another spot…they can try again another day!
